Semaglutide is a medication approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for the treatment of obesity. It belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which work by regulating appetite and promoting feelings of fullness. Tirzepatide is a GLP-1/GIP receptor, so it has an additional mechanism of action. Studies have shown that tirzepatide may lead to greater weight loss; however, it is more expensive.

Semaglutide acts on one incretin receptor, GLP-1; tirzepatide acts on two incretin receptors, GLP-1 and GIP. Studies have show that tirzepatide may lead to greater weight loss, and typically patients experience less GI symptoms (nausea, diarrhea/constipation). Both options will be discussed during the free initial consultation.

Semaglutide/tirzepatide helps with weight loss by acting on the brain’s appetite control centers, reducing hunger and calorie intake. It also slows down stomach emptying, leading to a longer-lasting feeling of fullness after meals.

These medications are typically prescribed for adults with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 or higher who have at least one weight-related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. However, BMI is not always an accurate measurement, and is not a hard line for treatment.

Weight loss varies from person to person, and is dependent on multiple factors. Clinical trials have shown that semaglutide/tirzepatide lead to significant weight loss when combined with diet and exercise. Over 12 weeks, patients may see a weight loss of 5-10% of their initial body weight, but this does vary. Healthy weight loss is defined as 1-2 lb/wk.

Common side effects of semaglutide may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. In some cases, it can also cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in individuals with diabetes. Rare but serious side effects may include pancreatitis and gallbladder problems. Tirzepatide may have these same side effects, but is often better tolerated.

Semaglutide is typically administered as a once-weekly injection under the skin (subcutaneously). The dosage may vary depending on individual patient needs and tolerance.
